The ASN Home Dialysis Scholarship Program provides nephrology fellows with comprehensive, practical education in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis. Developed in collaboration with Home Dialysis University (HDU), the program combines an immersive, in-person course with a longitudinal virtual education series led by home dialysis experts.
Through case-based learning, small-group discussions, and ongoing engagement with faculty and peers, participants strengthen the knowledge and skills needed to provide high-quality home dialysis care and support patients in selecting and sustaining home therapies.
The 2026–2027 Scholarship Cohort
Seventy nephrology fellows from training programs across the United States were selected to participate in the 2026–2027 ASN Home Dialysis Scholarship Program.
In August 2026, the fellows completed a 2.5-day, in-person HDU course in Dallas, Texas. The course included didactic instruction and interactive, small-group workshops addressing common clinical scenarios in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis.
Following the in-person course, participants are continuing their education through an 11-session virtual series held from September 2026 through June 2027. During these monthly sessions, fellows work through case-based discussions with expert faculty and their scholarship cohort.
Program Components
In-Person Home Dialysis University (HDU) Course
The 2.5-day HDU course provides an immersive introduction to the clinical and practical aspects of home dialysis. Interactive workshops allow fellows to apply what they learn to realistic patient-care scenarios while building relationships with faculty and colleagues from across the country.
ASN/HDU Virtual Education Series
The longitudinal virtual series provides continued opportunities to explore home dialysis topics in greater depth. The curriculum includes:
- Modality education and shared decision-making
- Peritoneal dialysis access
- Home hemodialysis access, cannulation, training, and transition home
- Peritoneal dialysis prescribing
- Home hemodialysis prescribing
- Nocturnal home hemodialysis and home hemodialysis complications
- Peritoneal dialysis infection prevention and management
- Volume management in home dialysis
- Noninfectious peritoneal dialysis complications
- Strategies to support patients in remaining on home dialysis
- Home dialysis program infrastructure
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Have the support of their nephrology training program director.
- Be entering their second or third year of an accredited nephrology fellowship program in the United States at the time of the in-person course;
- Have not previously attended Home Dialysis University;
- Be able to participate in the full in-person course and longitudinal virtual education series; and
Travel Support
ASN provides scholarship recipients with support to attend the in-person HDU course. Support typically includes course registration, hotel accommodations, meals during the course, and reimbursement for eligible travel expenses. Specific benefits and reimbursement limits are provided during each annual application cycle.
Annual Application
Applications for the ASN Home Dialysis Scholarship Program open annually in the spring, typically in early April. Application deadlines, eligibility requirements, program dates, and travel-support details are announced on this webpage when the application opens.
Interested fellows are encouraged to return to this page in early April 2027 for information about the next scholarship cycle.

Current Participant Resources
The ASN/HDU Virtual Education Portal is available only to fellows registered for the virtual education series. Participants may use the portal to access session materials, join live sessions, and view recordings.
Graduates may continue to access materials through the appropriate program-year archive.
